And the Oscar goes to…rebranding

oscarsThe 85th Academy Awards air this Sunday, February 24, 2013. The Oscars start at 8:30PM ET / 7:30PM CT / 5:30PM PT.

You might not have noticed, but there’s an attempt to rebrand the awards show this year.

According to the show’s co-producer, Neil Meron, calling it the “85th Academy Awards” sounded too “musty.”

“We’re rebranding it,” Meron told entertainment news website TheWrap.

“We’re not calling it ‘The 85th annual Academy Awards’…It’s called ‘The Oscars’,” he said.

He says the new approach would continue in years to come.

Last year’s Oscars poster was clearly emblazoned with “The 84th Academy Awards.” This year’s shows a picture of smiling host Seth MacFarlane under “The Oscars,” in gold.

What do you think? Is the rebranding necessary? If the big guns at the Academy think so, should you think about rebranding your “musty” small business identity?

Be like Joumana

Be like Joumana. Her advertisements are ubiquitous throughout the Detroit Metropolitan area. On billboard and buses, and who knows where else? It’s always the same, her picture accompanied by the same wording: Injured? 1-866-Your-Rights Attorney, Joumana Kayrouz.  She has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising.

Is it working? Clinton Township lawyer William Dobreff, who knows and works with Kayrouz says, “Her law firm is growing in a market where a lot of other firms are struggling.”

I realize your small business can’t afford an advertising budget like the one Ms. Kayrouz wields, but you can follow her example on a smaller scale.

Magnetic car signs can get your business out in the eyes of the public for a dirt cheap cost. You won’t be seen by as quite as many people as Ms. Kayrouz, but you’ll be seen. When designing your sign:

  1. Sum up your business as succinctly as possible – in one word if possible – and make that the very first thing people notice. A bold red typeface on a white background is very noticeable.
  2. Make your phone number prominent. If letters work in place of your telephone number then try it for something memorable (Palmerworks is 734-252-WEB1).
  3. Include a web address. This is where a well-thought-out, short and memorable URL comes in handy.
  4. Your company’s name and the picture are less important; people want to know what you do and how to get into contact with you.

Palmerworks Web & Print Design can help you design an attractive and profession magnetic sign for your vehicle at a very low cost. Contact us at 734-252-WEB1 – or email at info@palmerworks for a free consultation.

Marketing begins with the small stuff

We stop at a neighborhood restaurant in the morning to have breakfast. A couple of times a week, the back room is filled with people attending a local chapter meeting of a business networking organization. I know this much because there is a large poster in the restaurant lobby.

It sounds interesting, and I wish I knew more about the organization. There is a rack card holder on the poster’s left, and a business card holder on the right. They are always empty.

I Googled the organization’s name on my smart phone to find out more about the meeting. After half a dozen screens, on a not too mobile-friendly website, I finally found information about the chapter.

Why did they make it so difficult? It didn’t have to be that way.

Marketing begins with the small stuff. That rack card holder should be replenished regularly. The same with the business card holder. Thousands of restaurant customers a day pass right by those empty holders. By leaving them empty, the organization is missing a golden advertising opportunity.

As a business owner, remember not to overlook the small details. You have to grab every opportunity you can to market your business or organization in order to get your name and information out to the public. A simple 4×9 rack card is inexpensive, yet can easily share a plethora of valuable information about your services.

Let Palmerworks help. We can create a user-friendly website where customers can easily access information on their smart phones. We can also design your rack cards, business cards, and other marketing materials to draw in more new clients.
